Suranjit cremated his ancestral home in Sunamganj

SUNAMGANJ : Veteran parliamentarian and Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta, who breathed his last yesterday at the age of 72, cremated at his village home at Anwarpur under Derai upazila of the district this evening.

He cremated with the wood of Chandan tree that he himself planted. Chandan tree is considered as holy tree in the Hindu mythology.

“Suranjit Sengupta himself planted the sapling of Chandan tree on the premises of his residence around 14-15 years ago. He used to nurture the tree whenever he went to his home,” Surnajit’s business manager Sujit Roy told.

Our Sunamganj correspondent reports: Derai Upazila Awami League announced three-day mourning at the death of the legendary leader hailed from the district.

Earlier in the morning today, prayers were offered at Jagannath temple at Derai seeking salvation of the departed soul.

His body was brought at his constituency Salla under Sunamganj at about 2 pm to allow the people to pay their last tributes to their beloved leader.

Later, his body was taken to his residence at Derai where hundreds of people cutting across their social backgrounds had their last glimpses of the veteran leader.

After the completion of familial rituals, he cremated at his ancestral home at Anwarpur.

The body was brought to the “Shaheed Sritisoudh” in the Poura town at 1 pm where a guard of honour was given to Sengupta by a squad of police there.

District administration, police administration, Awami League, BNP, Communist Party, Jasod, Pourasabha Muktijoddha Sangsad, Zila Lawyer Society and different political, social and cultural organizations paid rich tributes to veteran Awami League leader by placing wreaths on his coffin there.

At that time, president of the Zila Awami League Motiur Rahman, general secretary Enamul Kabir Emon, organizing secretaries Ahamad Hossain and Misbahuddin and Suronjit’s son Soumen Sengupta spoke, among others.

When his was taken to Sylhet central Shaheed Minar at 11 am this morning, Chief whip ASM Feroze, whip Sahabuddin, lawmakers Muhibur Rahman Manik, Pankaj Debnath, Majid Khan, Sylhet Zila Parishad Chairman Lutfur Rahman, general secretary of Zila Awami League Shafukur Rahman, president of the city Awami League Badar Uddin Ahamad Kamran and BNP leader Ariful Haque paid rich tributes to the Awami League leader.

Suranjit Sengupta died in the capital city on Sunday at a private hospital.

Family and hospital sources said Sengupta, who was suffering from cancer, breathed his last at about 4.29 am, hours after he was put on life support system at the Labaid Hospital. He was admitted at the hospital on Friday.

Sengupta is a member of Awami League Advisory Council and chairman of Jatiya Sangsad standing committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry and previously served as the railways minister.

He was also a member of the lawmakers committee which framed Bangladesh’s original constitution.

Sengupta left behind his wife, only son, host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to veteran Awami League leader and former minister Suranjit Sengupta, MP, by placing wreaths on his coffin at South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban here on Sunday afternoon.

Later, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Deputy Speaker Fazley Rabbi Mian, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Begum Raushan Ershad, Chief Whip ASM Feroze and other whips placed wreaths separately on the coffin.

Earlier, a guard of honour was given to Sengupta by the members of Bangladesh Police, while Chief Whip spoke briefly on his life and works.
