‘Robber’ killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

Kushtia : An alleged robber was killed in a gunfight with detectives at Alampur on Kushtia-Jhenaidah highway in Sadar upazila of Kushtia district early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Amirul Islam, 35.

Sabbirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Detective Branch (DB), said acting on secret information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery on the highway, a team of the DB conducted a drive there around 1:30 am.

Sensing danger, the robbers opened fire at the detectives, prompting a retaliation that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Amirul was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his other associates managed to flee the scene.

Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Police also recovered one LG, some bullets and some sharp weapons from the spot.
