DHAKA : Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit chief Monirul Islam said Jahangir Alam alias Rajib Gandhi, one of the masterminds behind Holey Artisan Bakery attack, was involved in as many as 22 murders across the country.

“He was the commander of neo-JMB’s north region wing and was involved in the murders of professor Rezaul Karim of Rajshahi University and Freedom Fighter Hossain Ali of Gaibandha, among others,” Monirul said at a press briefing held at DMP media center in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s CTTC unit arrested Gandhi from Elenga Bus Stand in Tangail last night and will produce him before the court today.

“We will seek 10-day remand and hopefully will get some valuable information regarding the activities of the banned militant outfit. Gandhi was directly involved with Tamim and Marjan in plotting the Holey Artisan attack,” Monirul added.

According to the police, Gandhi recruited Md Khairul Islam Payel and Md Shafikul Islam Uzzal, two militants who took part in Holey Artisan Bakery attack, in JMB and sent them to Dhaka to take part in the carnage.

He also lived in the militants’ operational house in Basundhara for a week and prepared the would be attackers for Gulshan operation. Gandhi also gave training to Shafiul Islam alias Dawn for Sholakia attack and sent him to Tamim.

Hailing from Gobindaganj of Gaibandha, Gandhi joined neo-JMB in 2004 and earlier was involved with the militant group under the leadership of Shaykh Abdur Rahman.

“Initially Gandhi was an associate of mainstream JMB’s shura member Dr Nazrul Islam and later joined neo-JMB,” Monirul said.

While answering a question on the whereabouts of other leaders of neo-JMB, the CTTC unit boss said, “our operations against other militants including Basaruzzaman Chocolate are going on.”
